From the 1850s to 1880s Carte de Visite were a popular form of studio portrait. Originally intended as a development of the visiting card showing an image of the visitor rather than a name, they were more readily used for family to share photographs of one another. Often displayed in beautiful albums cards sometimes have names dates and family history written on the back. Many studios sprang up offering their services and the back of the card sometimes has beautifully designed logos and information advertising the business.
Each bookmark has been created using an original photographic portrait card as described above. As an antique piece it will show signs of wear and may have marks or faded spots but still looks beautiful for an item over 100 years old. A grosgrain ribbon has been fitted to help keep the bookmark secure between the pages of your book, colours may vary. The ribbon has been heat sealed to prevent fraying.
The card itself measures approximately 10cm x 6cm (3.9" x 2.4"). The length of the bookmark from the top of the card to the end of the ribbon is approximately 22cm (8.7").
An information card is included which can be useful if you are giving the bookmark as a gift and the recipient may not be familiar with this type of ephemera.
Every Carte de Visite is individual, some will have a decorated reverse some will be blank. Each picture has been given a letter and shows the front and back for that particular bookmark. Select from the variations the one you would like.
